Turkey-based airport operator TAV has signed an agreement with the country’s general directorate of state airports authority DHMI to expand the international terminal at Istanbul Atatürk Airport, which will cost €75m.

Atatürk Airport is considered to be Turkey’s largest airport, receiving close to 52.1 million passengers in 2013.

As a part of the agreement, the terminal will be expanded from 17,000m² to 27,000m². It will also get eight additional passenger boarding bridges.

The number of check-in counters, as well as baggage handling and car park capacities will also be increased.

The work is expected to be completed in 16 months.

TAV Airports president and CEO Sani Sener said: "Last week, the new apron investment of DHMI at the air side was put into service.

"The cargo hangar investments of Turkish Airlines, Havas and Çelebi at the new cargo section have also been completed."

"Additional 26 parking lots will bring significant relief to the parking capacity. The cargo hangar investments of Turkish Airlines, Havas and Çelebi at the new cargo section have also been completed.

"We have signed the agreement regarding the investment consisting of the expansion of the international terminal to the former cargo area, early baggage storage facility and third luggage facility to be built for the increasing transit passenger number of Turkish Airlines and addition of a new check-in isle in the main building."

TAV is responsible for operating Istanbul Atatürk Airport until 2021. TAV has guaranteed to compensate for its losses in the event that DHMI stops operation of Atatürk Airport before the expiry of the concession period.

The airport served approximately 47.9 million passengers in the first eight months of 2014, which is an increase of 11%.
