Congonhas Airport (CGH) in Brazil is testing a digital facial recognition technology developed by IDEMIA in the shuttle service operating between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
The Project Embarque + Seguro 100% Digital Boarding System is said to be the world’s first testing where passengers will not be required to show their boarding pass or an identification document while boarding the air shuttle.

By GlobalDataThis pilot project has been developed by Brazil’s Ministry of Infrastructure in collaboration with Serpro, the Special Secretariat of Debureaucratization and the Management and Digital Government of the Ministry of Economy.
The project has already been trialled at the airports of Florianópolis (FLN), Salvador (SAL), Santos Dumont (SDU) and Belo Horizonte (CNF).
Once approved, the federal government will start planning for the implementation of the technology in key Brazilian airports.
The Idemia-developed MFACE technology captures facial biometrics within seconds.
This technology helps in organising the boarding process, avoiding queues and interruptions.
In a statement, Idemia said: “Throughout the day, Azul Linhas Aéreas’s passengers travelling between Congonhas and Santos Dumont airports will be invited to try the biometric facial recognition technology to access both boarding area and aircraft at both terminals.”
Those passengers who will be participating in this project will receive a text message on their mobile phones for authorisation to collect the passenger’s data such as the social security number and a photo.
Thereafter, an airline attendant will carry out the biometric validation of the passenger by using the application developed by Serpro.
Once authenticated, the passenger is permitted to enter the departure hall and the aeroplane while moving through biometric control points.
These control points’ cameras will confirm the passenger’s identity without requiring any document or boarding pass.
Serpro president Gileno Barreto said: “Embarque + Seguro combines biometric validation and data analysis, ensuring an accurate, agile and secure validation of the identity of passengers, who can thus travel with more comfort and tranquillity. The solution complies with the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) and is premised on security in the processing of personal data against misuse or unauthorised use.”
