German air navigation service provider DFS has chosen the Frequentis VCS3020X voice communication system to be incorporated at nine of its airport towers, including Berlin, Frankfurt and Leipzig.

The project to modernise voice communication systems will be ready to support ED-137 VoIP technology.

DFS has put its trust in Frequentis VCS for three decades and has selected it for the next phase of technology advances again.

“We have awarded the supply of voice communication systems to Frequentis and are confident that their technology and expertise fulfil the demands required of this tower project. Over the next five years nine DFS towers will be equipped with Frequentis VCS allowing us to provide continued safe and efficient tower services across Germany.” states DFS COO Robert Schickling.

DFS required a standard off-the-shelf product implementation for the tower voice communication modernisation project, and the application includes integrated ATIS backup and new cybersecurity functions, including threat detection and domain security. The system can be centrally monitored and remotely upgraded to provide the lowest total cost of ownership for DFS.

“Selecting our IP voice solution for this important multi-tower project characterises the trust and confidence DFS has in our expertise and our technology. We are pleased to be supporting such an important project that demands forward-thinking solutions for a range of demands”, says Frequentis ATM Civil vice-president Hannu Juurakko.

VCS3020X provides safety-critical Air/Ground and Ground/Ground communication with the highest reliability, for single and networked ACCs, Approach units and aerodrome control towers, bringing unrivaled scalability and redundancy without compromising on quality of service or safety.

Frequentis’ expertise in voice communication systems also led to its involvement in the FABEC N-VCS and Danube FAB programmes to provide dynamic airspace management in Europe, allowing for safety, efficiency and cost improvements. Interoperability between airspace blocks is the next step in enhancing ATM communication infrastructures.

In an additional agreement, Frequentis will also deliver DIVOS voice recording to complete the tower voice communication modernisation project by facilitating legal recording.
