In a captivating display of wildlife conservation, a pair of peregrine falcons, nesting on the rural Honoré-Mercier Bridge, located in Montreal, Quebec, have found themselves becoming adoptive parents. In collaboration with the Transport Ministry and JCCBI, Falcon Environmental orchestrated a delicate operation relocating four precious peregrine falcon eggs from Laviolette Bridge in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. Prompted by the unwavering determination of the falcon couple residing at the Laviolette Bridge to rear their offspring amidst a construction zone, the Ministry swiftly intervened to ensure the safety of both the falcons and ongoing infrastructure development.
Peregrine falcons have established a longstanding sanctuary for nesting on the Laviolette Bridge. This preferred habitat echoes their natural affinity for cliff environments. Despite efforts to encourage relocation to a section of the bridge not as impacted by construction work, the falcons persisted in their chosen nesting site, prompting innovative solutions to ensure their welfare amid construction on the bridge.
While the adoptive parents are diligently tending to their newfound responsibility, a behaviour common among falcons due to their strong maternal instincts, the FALCON team will continue to monitor the eggs at the Honoré-Mercier Bridge. This bridge has become an unexpected haven for wildlife, including the peregrine falcons, showcasing the bridge’s unique role in fostering biodiversity.
