By GlobalDataSituated on the northeast side of the airport, Runway 8/26 will be closed for development works until 31 October.
The rehabilitation project will see crews replacing 72,000 square yards of pavement, upgrading runway sensors and taxiway safety areas.
The airport is collaborating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to minimise the potential impact on airlines and passengers during the work.
While the construction project is underway, the airport's other five runways will operate as usual.
Colorado-based Interstate Highway Construction has undertaken resurfacing work for the runway, which will involve replacing 1,041 panels of concrete.
Under its pavement management programme, the airport inspects each individual concrete slab every three years in order to identify any signs of deterioration, in addition to annual checks by the FAA.
Denver International Airport chief operating officer Ken Greene was quoted by Fox31Denver as saying: “Denver International Airport has one of the busiest airfields in the world, and we are committed to the maintenance and safety of this infrastructure.
"This work is a capital investment that helps ensure that the airport remains one of the most efficient in the country.”
The airport has six non-intersecting runways, five of which measure 12,000ft in length.
One runway, 16R/34L, measures 16,000ft and is the longest commercial runway in North America.
