Airport operator Lithuanian Airports has opened market consultations on an international public tender to expand the passenger terminal at Kaunas Airport.
Announcements to find a contractor will be made at the end of April, with work slated to commence in the second half of 2023 until 2025.
The expansion is intended to generate more revenues from aviation and non-aviation activities.
It will involve the overhaul and expansion of both arrival and departure areas for passengers.
Renovation works will be undertaken across all three floors of the terminal, including an expansion of baggage reclaim area and the Schengen and non-Schengen arrival area.
In addition, the project will add more spaces for passengers to wait for their flights, to dine and shop.
Upon completion, the departures and arrivals areas of Kaunas Airport will be capable of handling more than 800 passengers and up to six aircraft simultaneously.
The company ensures no operational disruption at the airport due to the expansion.
Lithuanian Airports operation and infrastructure department director Arnas Dūmanas said: “According to current estimates, the total area of the terminal should increase by about 3,500 square metres and the airport will be able to handle up to six passenger flights per hour. For comparison, Kaunas Airport is currently able to handle four passenger flights at the same time.”
In addition to expanding passenger terminal, Kaunas Airport plans to develop additional aircraft parking and engine testing areas in the northern apron.
The new apron will have an area of more than 35,000m2 and will increase aircraft parking spaces at the airport by more than 50%.
Arnas Dūmanas added: “The apron expansion project is not only important for the airport’s operations, but also for the development of aircraft handling activities in particular. Kaunas Airport is one of the regional leaders in this field, so the aim is to maintain and strengthen the handling capacity.”
