By GlobalDataThe government has set up a technical working committee with members from airport operators, airlines and industry to oversee the development of standards.
The Digi Yatra Central Platform is set to be operational by the end of February next year. The programme will be tested at Bangalore and Hyderabad International Airports.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) plans to launch the programme initially at Kolkata, Varanasi, Pune and Vijayawada airports by April next year.
Government of India minister of State of Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said: “Under the Digi Yatra, passengers can get a Digi Yatra ID by sharing minimum details like Name, e-mail ID, Mobile number and details of one approved identity proof where Aadhar ID is not mandatory.”
A traveller who has created the Digi Yatra ID will have to undergo a one-time verification at the departure during his or her first travel.
If the passenger has selected Aadhar-based verification, the identity will be verified online. Once the verification is successful, facial biometric will be captured and stored in the Digi Yatra ID profile of the passenger.
However, if the traveller has chosen any other verification method for creating Digi Yatra ID, they will be manually authenticated by security personnel and facial biometric will be captured and stored in the Digi Yatra ID profile.
Minister of State of Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Nayan Choubey said: “A camera will capture the face for comparing with DigiYatraID Photo.
“On successful verification of the travel details and facial matching, the E-Gate will open. The system will also generate a token in the system combining the face of the passenger with PNR of the ticket, so that at subsequent checkpoints the ticket details will be available on face recognition.”
The biometric-based digital processing system will reduce congestion during passenger screening while helping the airport to gather travel information in advance for better resource planning and the real-time data of passengers within the terminal.
