Boeing has begun fatigue testing on the structural airframe of the 787 Dreamliner.

The 787 airframe test rig simulates multiple lifecycles to observe the airplane’s response over time.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes structures vice-president Jim Ogonowski said that fatigue testing was a much longer process than static testing, simulating up to three times the number of flight cycles an airplane is likely to experience during a lifetime of service.

Fatigue testing verifies the capability of the aircraft to endure long-term continued use.

The testing is part of the process to achieve US Federal Aviation Administration certification.
