India has unveiled a satellite-based navigation system, the global position system-aided geo augmented navigation (Gagan) system.

Based on a constellation of 24 satellites positioned in six Earth-centred orbital planes, Gagan will provide coverage of air traffic from south Asia to Africa, according to the Press Trust Of India.

The system will also be able to connect to the systems in Europe and Japan and is expected to enhance marine and transport navigation, search and rescue operations, survey and mapping.

Gagan is a joint initiative of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Airports Authority of India (AAI).
