Flybe has ordered up to 140 Embraer 175 and E-family aircraft at the Farnborough Air Show, currently taking place in UK.

The order, with a potential value of $5bn, includes 35 firm orders valued at $1.3bn, options for 65 more at $2.3bn and $1.4bn purchase rights for a further 40 aircraft.

The 88-seat Embraer 175 aircraft will enable Flybe to maintain its two-fleet strategy as the E-195 is common rated with the 175 and the carrier will continue to operate Bombardier Q400 aircraft.

The aircraft is also equipped with modern aviation technology base for the company for the next ten years.

Flybe chairman and chief executive Jim French said the 175 would give Flybe significant added capacity and is particularly suited to the sector lengths prevalent in Europe that the carrier is most interested in exploiting.

The first aircraft will be delivered in September 2011 with final delivery on the firm orders in March 2017.
