Ufa International Airport is the primary airport serving the city of Ufa, the capital city of Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. Located at the intersection of two major Russian highways, the M5 and M7, the airport is the main link between Bashkortostan and the federal centres of Russia.
It is the first regional airport in Russia to be complaint with ISAGO (IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations) industry standards, and is equipped with a modern aerial system capable of receiving all types of aircraft. It also acts as a backup airfield for all the airports located within a radius of 1,000km.
The airport has two terminals, domestic and international, and has two runways and taxiways. It is served by 41 airlines, including Aeroflot, Siberia, Armenia, Orenburg airlines, Astra Airlines and so on.
Yuzhny International Airport is a new airport to be constructed 29km away from Rostov-on-Don city in southern Russia.
The airport witnessed passenger traffic of two million in 2014, a 7.3% rise from 2013, and a total cargo volume of 3,701.6t.
The airport initiated a modernisation project in 2014, with the international terminal undergoing a RUR2bn expansion. The modernisation increased the passenger processing capacity of the terminal to 800 passengers an hour, from the previous 200 passenger an hour. The renovated terminal was officially opened in May 2015.
International terminal reconstruction details
Reconstruction of the international terminal, which first became operational in 2001, started in 2014 and lasted for one and half years. It added approximately 3,800m² of floor space to the terminal, increasing the total built-up area to 17,000m².
The renovated terminal now has two floors, featuring 13 check-in desks, 40 passport control booths for arrival, departure and VIP service, and three aero bridges. The ground floor houses operations related to passenger baggage processing including registration, delivery and sorting. It also includes a zone for passenger service on arrival. The second floor features green and red corridors for customs control, passport control, a common security area, and a departure lounge for international flights.
The terminal is fully-automated and optimised, with a new software base and improved models of peripheral equipment. Barrier-free environment is maintained within the terminal, allowing passengers with disabilities to move freely.
Runway reconstruction
The airport modernisation also included the reconstruction of the second runway, which is parallel to the first artificial runway. The renovated runway serves up to 120 aircraft a day, including large aircraft such as Boeing-747 and Boeing-777.
Airside improvements at Ufa airport
Airfield improvements at the airport included the reconstruction of taxiways, provision for 36 aircraft stands, and upgraded lighting equipment. It also included the installation of three telescopic gangways, which are capable of handling all types of aircraft.
The airport is classified as Category E by ICAO, making it eligible to receive any type of aircraft including Boeing 747-777s. It expects to receive Category II certification in future, which allows landing operations in virtually all weather-conditions.
Other works, including the construction of water treatment facilities, drainage, patrol roads, and reconstruction of apron and aircraft parking areas are scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.
The second phase of development will also see airfield improvements, including strengthening of the carrier covering the second runway, taxiways N and F, reconstruction of the existing lighting equipment, and strengthening the existing apron. It is scheduled for completion by October 2015.
Details of the existing domestic terminal at the airport
The domestic terminal has 12,600m² of floor space, and features three aerobridges. It processes 600 passengers an hour and features spacious waiting rooms and rest areas. Reconstruction of the domestic terminal is expected to take place in 2016.
