Sarasota Airport

Sarasota Bradenton International airport, located three miles away from Sarasota County in Florida, US, acts as a gateway to the south-west Gulf coast of Florida. The airport is spread over approximately 1,100 acres and most its property including half of Airside B, runways and taxiways, three fixed base operators (FBOs) and certain other lands are located in Manatee County. The City of Sarasota hosts a major portion of long-term parking.

The airport is owned and operated by the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority (SMAA). It served more than 1.18m passengers and recorded more than 98,057 aircraft movements in 2013.The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded a discretionary grant of $4m for the construction of a new Air Traffic Control Tower (ATC) at the airport in August 2014. The new ATC tower will be constructed at the south-west part of the airport, which will allow for the development of about 40 acres for hangars and other commercial buildings at the existing ATC tower that is located on the north-east side of the airfield.

The project will be financed by the FAA, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and SMAA with $9.1m. It also will include terminal renovation, expansion of the US Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Services (FIS) facility and airfield taxi lanes.

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport terminal features

The airport has a single passenger terminal which was opened in October 1989. The terminal has an interior space of 240,000ft² that includes ground and second levels. The ground level is facilitated with ticketing counters, baggage claim area, rental cars, and baggage carts. The second level features 14 gates, Customs and Federal Inspection Services (FIS) counter, statues of Hernando DeSoto, and a 6,000 gallon saltwater aquarium.

"Other facilities at the terminal include restaurants, snack bars, mailing centre, airport police, ATMs, conference centre, free Wi-Fi, and lost and found centre."

The terminal features exhibition space for large acrylic paintings by local artists. It also includes a security point before the second level entry.

Baggage handling systems

G&S Airport Conveyor was awarded with a contract to design and build the inline baggage handling system at the airport in 2006.

Runways at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport

The airport has two runways – the first runway (4/22) is 1,527m (5,009ft) long and the second runway (14/32) is 2,896m (9,500ft) long. Both the runways are paved with asphalt. Runway 4/22 is exclusively used by general aviation aircraft while runway 14/32 is used by commercial jets and other aircraft.

Covenient terminal parking

"The parking is conveniently located close to the terminal building. It has a total of 1,450 public parking spaces including short-term lot spaces and long term spaces."

Another 257 lots located adjacent to the west end of the short-term lot are allotted for car rental companies, while 300 spaces located to the west of the terminal are allotted for the airport employees.

Free parking for visitors is offered for the first 20 minutes. Two automated exit lanes are located at the public parking lot.

Maintenance facilities

The fixed-base operations (FBOs) and ground handling companies at the airport include APP Jet Center, Dolphin Aviation and Retrix Aerodrome centre. These companies offer a variety of facilities/services including hangars, maintenance, flight instruction, repair, fuelling, rentals, and charters.

Ground transportation leaving Sarasota Airport

A variety of transportation services are available from the airport including taxi services, pre-arranged limousines, courtesy vehicles, and shuttle services. The ground transportation area is located at the west end of the baggage claim area.
