DA62 (formerly DA52) is a new twin-engine light aircraft from Diamond Aircraft Industries. The aircraft is mainly intended for use by individual owners, air taxi services and corporate operators.
The DA62 completed its maiden flight in April 2012 and was awarded European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) type-certification in April 2015.
The aircraft is offered in two configurations, which vary in the maximum take-off mass (MTOM). The 1,999kg MTOM variant can carry five passengers, whereas the 2,300kg MTOM version can accommodate seven.
The DA62 was displayed at the 2015 AERO Friedrichshafen general aviation show.
DA62 design and features
DA40 XLT is a new variant of the Diamond Star 40 aircraft series developed by Diamond Aircraft.
The DA62 features a monocoque fuselage, made of lightweight and robust carbon-fibre composites, and a cabin with gull-wing doors. It incorporates ultramodern safety avionics and redundant flight systems and is equipped with a retractable tricycle landing gear.
The aircraft has a length of 9.19m, wing span of 14.55m and height of 2.83m. The lower MTOM variant carries 470kg of useful load, while the higher MTOM version can transport 730kg.
Cockpit and avionics
The cockpit can accommodate two crew members, a pilot and a co-pilot, and incorporates electrically adjustable rudder pedals. It is equipped with a Garmin G1000 all-glass avionics suite integrating a primary flight display (PFD), a multi-function display (MFD) and an MD-302 digital standby attitude module (SAM).
The instrumentation also includes a Garmin GEA 71 airframe/engine interface unit, GIA 63W input/output line replaceable unit (LRU), GMA 1347 digital audio system, GDC 74 digital air data computer, GMU 44 magnetometer, GFC 700 automatic flight control system (AFCS) with yaw damper and 406MHz emergency locator transmitter (ELT).
The flight deck can be integrated with a GRS77 attitude and heading reference system (AHRS), a Garmin GTX 33 Mode S transponder, optional Class-B terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS), and weather radar.
Cabin features of DA62
The spacious and comfortable cabin accommodates up to seven passengers. The large cargo door allows the entry/exit of passengers and loading/off-loading of cargo in the rear cabin area. Lighting is provided by an overhead ambient cabin light, reading lights and a map light.
The ergonomic seating, with armrests, backrests and fabric inlays, provides a luxurious travelling experience for passengers. The aircraft has two front baggage compartments, while the rear cabin can be configured to carry either passengers or cargo.
Engines
The DA62 is powered by two Austro Engine AE330 turbocharged common-rail injected 2L diesel engines, which are compliant with Jet A-1, Jet A, TS-1, RT, No. 3 Jet Fuel and JP-8 fuels. Each engine drives a MTV-6-R-C-F/CF 194-80 three-bladed constant-speed propeller. A 189L main tank and a 137L auxiliary tank supply fuel to the engines.
The power plant is controlled by an electronic engine control unit (EECU). The modern piston aircraft engines deliver better performance than conventional gasoline engines, and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption.
Performance of the DA62 twin-engine aircraft
The DA62 aircraft has a maximum speed of 372km/h and a cruise speed of 333km/h. It can reach a maximum distance of 2,433km. The maximum rate of climb of the aircraft is 8.4m/s and the certified service ceiling is 6,096m.
The 2,300kg MTOM variant requires a maximum runway distance of 480m for take-off and a ground distance of 390m for landing.
