Belgrade Nikola Tesla International Airport is the second busiest airport in Europe. Located 12km away from Belgrade city in the Surčin Municipality, Serbia, the airport opened in 1962. Previously known as Belgrade International Airport, it was renamed in the honour of Nikola Tesla, a Serbian scientist, in 2006. The airport is owned and operated by Aerodrom Nikola Tesla Beograd.
The airport, which features ILS CAT IIIb equipment, has a single 3,400m-long runway (12/30) and is paved with concrete and asphalt. Belgrade Nikola Tesla International Airport handled 3.36 million passengers and recorded more than 44,990 aircraft movements in 2012.

Terminal features
The airport has two terminal buildings, covering around 51,000m² with the capacity to handle eight million passengers a year. Terminal one initially handled domestic flights only, but it is also being used by low-cost and charter airlines since the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 2006.
Terminal two was constructed in 1980s and is used mainly for international flights. The terminal has a capacity to handle around five million passengers a year. It has 33 check-in desks, six gates, and arrivals and departures areas. It is currently being refurbished to provide more services to growing passengers numbers. The airport also has one cargo terminal.
The facilities at the terminals include 16 gates, 15 airbridges and three baggage claim belts. The passenger terminals feature business-class and departure lounges, immigration areas, duty-free shopping, ATMs, cafes and restaurants.
Expansions
The modernisation and expansion of Nikola Tesla International Airport began in February 2012. It includes expansion of the terminal gates, security immigration areas, and business and departure lounges, and construction of an additional floor above terminal two, reconstruction of terminal one by replacing air bridges, and expansion of apron C area at terminal two.
The expansion, with an estimated investment of about €50m ($64.6m), is expected take three years and be completed by 2015.
The expansion of apron C at terminal two began in January 2013. It will add four extra parking spaces with a space of 26,000m². The total estimated investment on the expansion of Apron C is expected to be about €2.6m ($3.36m). The expansion is expected to be completed by summer 2013.
The construction contract for the expansion of apron C was awarded to Planum, while the electrical equipment installation contract was given to Minel inženjering Eving.
ATC tower
A new air traffic control (ATC) tower will be constructed as part of the modernisation and expansion project. The construction on the ATC tower is expected to begin in 2013. The tower, which will be 52m in height, is currently in the design phase and expected to be completed by 2014.
The construction of the ATC will be financed by the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA). The expected investment on the construction of the new ATC is €92m ($118.9m). The existing ATC tower at the airport was constructed in 1962.
Ground transportation and parking
The airport has various modes of ground transpiration facilities available, which include a public bus transport facility is available from the airport to the city centre, while a number of taxi service companies offer taxi services to the passengers travelling through the airport. There are also 19 car rental companies have offices at the international arrivals area of terminal two.
The airport has both short and long-term parking spaces available. It has more than 521 car parking spaces located in the multi-level parking, as well as 637 outdoor parking spaces.
