US-based aviation service provider Unifi Aviation has announced it will take over ground handling operations at Calgary International Airport for Canadian airline WestJet.

This partnership is Unifi’s first in the Canadian market, and is to expected launch on 7 November.

The scope of services Unifi will provide includes towing services, ramp handling and baggage services.

The company said 200 new employees were hired to enable the new contract.

Unifi CEO Gautam Thakkar said: "It's been an incredibly transformative time for Unifi and over the last two years, we focused on building a scalable infrastructure, strong leadership, efficient processes and cutting-edge technology to support our frontline employees in the critical work they do.

"We are thrilled to enter the Canadian aviation market through our partnership with WestJet, overseeing critical ground handling operations for the airline."

Unifi is one of the largest providers of aviation services in North America, with a presence in more than 200 airports globally.

This announcement follows Unifi’s recent expansion into the UK after the acquisition of Up & Away Aviation earlier this year, leading the company to entail $120m in growth.

WestJet VP of Airports David Powell emphasised how Unifi is set to continue the “reliable” services: "As we continue to strengthen the WestJet Group's investments in Western Canada, we are thrilled to be partnering with Unifi at our global connecting hub in Calgary.
