Spain's Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) has released Spanish air traffic levels across July 2023, demonstrating an increase in figures compared to pre-pandemic levels.

According to the figures, Spain's domestic market was the least hit by the Covid-19 pandemic and rebounded quicker than other sectors, with a 7.3% increase in July 2023 compared to 2019 levels.

Domestic traffic increased by 18% between January and July 2023 compared to 2022, resulting in 4 million additional passengers.

As highlighted in the January to July 2023 air traffic market results, of the 132.2 million passenger operations, 61.1 million (46%) came from domestic operations.

Raquel Sanchez, minister of transport, mobility and urban agenda, hailed these figures and declared July "a historic month for aviation” in Spain.

Sanches added: “Since 2021, our country has been one of the main drivers of aviation recovery, with more flight records than the European average, fewer delays and outstanding performance in safety standards, thanks to the public service commitment of the ENAIRE workers.”

In July 2023, ENAIRE, responsible for all national air navigation management, handled 1.1% more flights than in the same month in 2019. These figures demonstrate a healthy increase in air traffic, which exceeds pre-pandemic levels.

The air traffic results from the period of January to July 2023 further demonstrate an overall increase in passenger operations from 2022, revealing a healthy recovery rate post-pandemic.

Between January and July 2023, the number of passengers on commercial flights in the Spanish air market grew by 21.2% compared to 2022, up to 132.2 million.
