UAE flag carrier Emirates has announced a code share agreement with Batik Air Malaysia with the aim of expanding access across Southeast Asia for its customers.

The codeshare agreement is set to give Emirates customers access to eight new destinations across southeast Asia via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

This agreement follows a previous codeshare partnership between the two airlines in 2022.

According to the terms of the agreement, Emirates will place its code on flights operated by Batik Air to Penang, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Langkawi, Johor Bahru, Denpasar, Jakarta and Singapore.

The Minister of Transport Malaysia YB Tuan Anthony Loke said: "We are pleased with the partnership, which has the potential to strengthen Malaysia's role as a prime gateway to the region. We hope to see an increase in KLIA traffic, especially to facilitate connectivity to regional destinations."

Emirates said it will be providing customers with an accessible single-ticket travel experience as they connect to new destinations.

In addition to this, customers travelling with Emirates will also have the option of stopping in Kuala Lumpur before continuing on to their ultimate destinations.

Emirates senior VP Orhan Abbas emphasised how this agreement will tap into important markets.

Abbas said: “Malaysia is an important market in our Far East network and we’re pleased to offer increased connectivity and more options for our customers to new and exciting destinations.

“Through this partnership, we’ll further expand our network reach to more than 1,490 cities worldwide. We look forward to working closely with our partner Batik Air on offering even better choices and more convenient experiences for travellers.”

This partnership has extended Emirates’ global cooperation, as the airline now has 30 codeshare partners, 11 intermodal partners and 118 interline partners.

This includes a recent interline agreement with Maldivian which allows Emirates customers access to 16 locations across the Maldives.
