Thales has inked a deal with Netherlands’ air navigation services provider Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland (LVNL) to deliver its RSM NG digital secondary surveillance radar to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

The radar will replace the existing system without disrupting service at the airport, it was claimed.

Air traffic controllers must continuously monitor aircraft positions to maintain security and passenger safety. Thales’s RSM NG, a new generation of secondary surveillance radars, is marketed as providing essential data for better air traffic management.

The RSM NG radar is said to work more efficiently than traditional “monopulse” secondary surveillance radar (MSSR) systems by integrating automatic dependent surveillance- broadcast (ADS-B) technology.

This combination yields a meta-sensor capable of merging various data levels, tracking up to 2,000 aircraft and managing 64 data outputs simultaneously, thus ensuring a 3NM separation between aircraft.

LVNL communication, navigation, and surveillance manager Edward Schaap said: “The new radar at Schiphol Airport, which Thales will implement in collaboration with LVNL, will contribute to ensuring that we can continue to manage air traffic safely, efficiently, and responsibly in the coming decades.”

Scheduled for delivery and installation at Schiphol Airport within less than a year, the RSM NG radar contract encompasses training for LVNL staff, provision of spare parts, and maintenance services for 15 to 25 years.

Thales civil radars segment vice president Lionel de Castellane said: “We are proud to continue to contribute to strengthening air traffic control surveillance detection for our long standing-customer and we thank them for their continued trust in our technology.

“With high technological expectations from LVNL, the RSM NG, represents a solid performance and no less than ten patents, with a track record of 40 RSM NG sold since the launch in 2021.”

Recently, Avinor, Norway’s air navigation service provider, chose Thales to implement a next-gen unmanned traffic management (UTM) system.

The system aims to support scalable drone operations and lay the groundwork for future Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) solutions alongside traditional aviation.
