Thales and Dah Chong Hong – Dragonair Airport GSE Service (DAS) have been appointed to install the new instrument landing system (ILS) solution and support the three-runway system (3RS) expansion project at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).
The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government selected the companies through a global open tender exercise.
As part of the project, six new ILS systems from Thales will be installed at HKIA under 3RS.
The new 32-element ultra-wide aperture localiser tracking antenna array is claimed to offer precise guidance signals to aircraft during approach and landing on the runway, in all weather conditions, day and night.
This will improve the safety and efficiency of aircraft landing at HKIA while requiring less equipment to protect the area.
The new ILS system will also support runways operated for Category III operations, including low-visibility operations (LVO) during fog or heavy rain conditions.
