Threat detection and security screening technologies provider Smiths Detection is set to deliver cabin baggage and security screening equipment throughout Heathrow Airport (LHR) in London, UK.
The integrated checkpoints will offer improved security and productivity.
Both parties have also signed a ten-year equipment service agreement.
Smiths Detection’s ECAC EDS CB C3-approved CT systems will help the airport to comply with the necessary regulatory requirements.
The integrated checkpoints will feature HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, Smiths Detection’s checkpoint operation management solution Checkpoint.Evoplus and iLane automatic tray return systems.
With low false alarm rates, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX provides advanced explosives detection by using 3D images, eliminating the need for the removal of electronics and liquids during the screening process.

By GlobalDataCheckpoint.Evoplus provides centralised screening by sending scanned images to operators based at different locations, leading to operational cost reduction and optimised resources management.
Furthermore, iLane automatic tray return systems will restructure the process of screening by maintaining a balanced flow of trays.
Smiths Detection president Roland Carter said: “We are delighted to once again be given the opportunity to work closely with Heathrow Airport to provide leading-edge technologies that bring the best security outcomes and passenger experience.
“Both Smiths Detection and Heathrow are focused on intelligent solutions that deliver efficiency, security and resilience and these new lanes will allow for improvements to be easily integrated as technology develops.”
The company also stated that the first lanes will be deployed later this year.
Earlier this month, Smiths Detection announced that its dual-view air cargo scanner, HI-SCAN 145180-2is pro, has been included in the ‘qualified’ section of the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Air Cargo Screening Technology List (ACSTL).
