Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, will host a new Urban Air Mobility (UAM) hub by 2030 according to new plans from the city’s local government.
The Gimpo Airport Innovation Zone will consist of three blocks built on a 350,000m² area, featuring a UAM take-off landing site and transfer facility, a public transport hub, and aviation business buildings.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said a basic plan for the $2.2bn project would be complete by 2025 and construction is expected to begin by 2027, depending on planning approvals.
As reported by the Korea Times, the site will also host a range of non-UAM-related infrastructure including education facilities, high-tech industrial buildings, studio apartments, and tech clusters to attract local businesses.
Development of the UAM hub is part of the city’s investments into the Gimpo Airport Innovation District and will see the demolition of a car park, water pump stations, and a cargo warehouse currently located in the area.
Thanks to government and private investment, South Korea has become a hub for UAM developments with flag carrier airline Korean Air also developing its own electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) infrastructure.
