San Antonio International Airport (SAT) in Texas, US has initiated the construction of a new $1.2bn terminal designed to support the region’s growth and enhance passenger experiences.

The new terminal is set to feature over 800,000ft2 of new terminal space, up to 17 gates, 35,700ft2 of concessions space, and 29,000ft2 of club lounge space. Completion of the terminal is expected by 2028.

It forms a part of the Terminal Development Program (TDP), aiming to guide the future development of the airport including the airfield, terminal facilities, ground access and support over the next two decades.

The programme is said to be a key component of Elevate/SAT, a $2.5bn expansion and capital improvement initiative announced in 2022, aimed at enhancing the airport and the surrounding San Antonio region.

The TDP’s economic impact is projected to reach $2.8bn, with the potential to create more than 16,000 new jobs.

San Antonio airports director Jesus Saenz said: “As SAT continues to experience record-breaking growth each month, this new terminal will ensure we meet the needs of passengers, businesses and partners from San Antonio and around the world.”

SAT currently serves more than ten million passengers annually, averaging 27,000 passengers a day.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said: “SAT continues to rise to the occasion and meet the demand of our region’s expansion.

“This new terminal will help the airport accomplish even more continued growth, fostering the development of important connections and business opportunities for our region.

“It will strengthen our position as a hub for global business, develop key industries that are economic drivers for our region, connect our local companies to new markets and bring in visitors who will contribute to our local economy.”

SAT unveiled the preliminary design of the terminal last year.
