The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has commissioned Rohde & Schwarz to overhaul Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) air traffic control (ATC) communications infrastructure.
This move is set to modernise the airport’s capabilities with advanced, IP-based ATC solutions, ensuring reliable communication channels between air traffic controllers and pilots.
The project will include the installation of the R&S Series5200 radios, which will be supplied in collaboration with Clearwisdom, the local Malaysian aviation company that won the contract for the project.
These radios are a key component of Rohde & Schwarz’s CERTIUM communications suite designed specifically for ATC environments.
The R&S Series5200 radios feature a compact design and offer a secure, flexible architecture alongside superior RF performance, which is critical for uninterrupted ATC communications.
CAAM CEO Dato’ Captain Norazman Bin Mahmud said: “Building on a long-standing trusted partnership, CAAM awards this complex project to Rohde & Schwarz based on the exceptional reliability and performance of Rohde & Schwarz over the last decades.”

By GlobalDataThis suite also includes the R&S RCMS II, a remote monitoring and management system that will be integrated into KLIA’s existing infrastructure, allowing for full-stack configuration and management of Rohde & Schwarz radios.
The R&S RCMS II provides operators with the ability to monitor the entire CERTIUM ecosystem, which includes CERTIUM radios, CERTIUM VCS, and CERTIUM gateways, as well as other SNMP-capable devices.
This system facilitates quick responses to any errors and allows operators to adjust operational parameters for various ATC scenarios.
Rohde & Schwarz ATC market segment vice president Marius Münstermann said: “Our CERTIUM solution will provide a robust, future-proof platform for the authority’s ATC operations, ensuring the safety and efficiency of air traffic management.
“The key benefits of this upgrade include simplified maintenance and a secure-by-design approach, ensuring the highest levels of security and integrity for ATC operations.”
In 2022, KLIA announced the deployment of the Airport Collaborative Decision-Making (A-CDM) integrated system to enhance efficiency in its operations.
