Saab Sensis has secured operational certification from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia to install wide area multilateration (WAM) and precision runway monitoring (PRM) systems at Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport.
The WAM system will provide Airservices Australia air traffic controllers with terminal airspace surveillance for improved coverage and separation services within the airport’s terminal manoeuvring area.
The system’s precision approach surveillance will allow separation of flights on independent parallel approaches to Sydney’s closely spaced parallel runways.
"The single Saab Sensis WAM system is enabling Airservices to achieve two critical goals at once: improve terminal area surveillance and replacement of the legacy PRM radar," said Saab Sensis Airservices acting general manager Technology and Asset Services Dan Galazowski. "We now have a terminal area surveillance solution that further enhances safety and provides the surveillance needed for precision approaches."
Airservices Australia will deploy the single WAM system in view of the increase in air traffic at Sydney airport and the development of the nearby Botany Bay port facility.

By GlobalDataThe deployment of single WAM will provide low level terminal airspace surveillance (to 40nm) for 3nm separation services in the terminal manoeuvring area and precision runway monitoring for independent parallel approaches in instrument meteorological conditions.
Saab Sensis will use similar sensors in both systems as in the existing Saab Sensis sensors being used for Sydney’s advanced – surface movement guidance and control system (A-SMGCS) for simplified maintenance and training.
The company will use multiple low-maintenance, non-rotating sensors to locate aircraft based on transponder signals, providing air traffic controllers with precise aircraft position and identification information regardless of weather conditions.
In addition, each multilateration sensor will support automatic dependent surveillance – broadcast to cater to future surveillance needs.
"With Saab Sensis WAM, Airservices Australia has a flexible, extensible solution that is compatible with today’s and tomorrow’s avionics and can readily grow with the airport," said Saab Sensis vice-president and general manager Ken Kaminski.
Saab Sensis has installed an operational WAM system in Tasmania and is deploying an A-SMGCS in Brisbane and Perth airports, and the system is operational in Melbourne airport.
