Port Columbus International Airport in Ohio, US, will complete a $35m in-line bag system by early December 2011.
The new system features a conveyor belt that will take luggage from ticket windows to Transportation Security Administration screeners.
The luggage will then be dropped down a conveyor where they can be searched by hand or by high-resolution computers.
The baggage system has an elevator that allows the bomb squad’s robot to enter the conveyor to search a suspicious item of baggage.
The system is already being used by US Airways, Continental and Southwest Airlines, and other airlines will start using them in January 2012.
