China's Xi'an Xianyang International Airport has officially chosen aviation planning and development company Landrum & Brown (L&B) to design the airport’s new East Terminal and Ground Transport Centre (GTC).

The competition against other international consortiums was a global effort led by the company’s China office.

It was supported by Chinese partners and L&B architectural design staff from studios in Australia and the US.

Selected as the competition winner, L&B will operate as the leader of the architectural design team for the new project.

The other team members comprise North West Design Institute, Chinese Architectural Design Institute and other specialists.

The new terminal, which will encompass an area of 700,000m², along with the 400,000m² related GTC, will cover a total floor area of more than 1.1 million square metres.

"This competition success and the ongoing design role is the further acknowledgment of the value that clients see in harnessing our specialist integrated skills across airport planning and terminal design."

L&B was selected as the winner of the competition as the judges found the entry to be ‘a most balanced, comprehensive, compatible and flexible scheme'.

L&B associate vice-president Xiang Huang said: “I believe this competition success and the ongoing design role is the further acknowledgment of the value that clients see in harnessing our specialist integrated skills across airport planning and terminal design and I am immensely proud of the achievement of our team.”

Last year, Xi'an Xianyang International Airport handled 37 million annual passengers.

With the completion of the next phase of development, the airport will have four parallel runways and the new East Terminal will be capable of accommodating 40 million passengers each year.
