Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the US is to expand its parking capacity and build an additional runway, as part of its new 20-year master plan.

The recommendations of the new plan were presented to Atlanta city council’s transportation committee by Miguel Southwell, the airport’s aviation general manager, along with the airport’s chief planner.

Under the short-term projects to be carried out in the next two to three years, the airport will replace the north and south parking garages, as well as increase the number of floors to double the parking capacity.

An end-around taxiway on one of the runways is also being planned, in order to eliminate the need for departing aircrafts to cross each other.

Additional gates to the east of the airport, as well as dedicated gates for international flights, will also be built. According to early projections, the airport will need nine new gates by 2021.

Airport officials also announced the construction of a new runway that would cost approximately $1bn. This will be the airport’s sixth runway and will be shorter than the fifth runway, which was built in 2006.

Southwell said that the biggest challenge involving the runway would be the ability to land four aircrafts simultaneously during bad weather.

While the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently prohibits four simultaneous landings, Southwell added that the airport hopes to resolve the problem and receive clearance from the FAA before construction on the new runway is completed.
