Germany’s Procurement Agency of the Federal Ministry of the Interior has selected Smiths Detection to provide hold baggage screening equipment for the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport BER.
Under the deal, Smiths Detection will provide eight of its next generation HI-SCAN 10080 XCT equipment, along with 30 image analysis stations.
The deal also includes six HI-SCAN 5180si models, which can be used when required as a backup in different locations around the airport.
Smiths Detection will deliver and install the equipment by the end of 2016.
The screening equipment, which complies with new European Union (EU) regulations, EDS Standard 3, will also be used by the German Federal Police.
Smiths Detection EMEA vice-president Tony Tielen said: “We take great pride in the fact that our EDS Standard 3-compliant hold baggage screening systems have been chosen to help to secure flights departing from the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport BER.”

The systems can detect explosive threats and be revamped to spot future ones, including homemade explosives.
The solution also offers a fast belt speed with the largest rectangular tunnel size in the EDS segment, and can scan up to 1,800 bags per hour.
Smiths Detection’s image analysis stations provide sharp, full colour, high-resolution images that could help streamline the entire inspection process.
