The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the US is set to provide a total of $335.3m airport infrastructure grants under its Airport Improvement Programme (AIP) to 237 airports across the country.
The grant programme is designed to fund airport infrastructure projects such as runways, taxiways, airport signage, lighting and markings, in turn providing thousands of job opportunities.
Based on high-priority project needs, FAA is further awarding discretionary funding to five airports.
AIP funding is awarded to airports depending on passenger volume, while discretionary funding is offered when an airport’s capital project requirements are more than their existing entitlement funds.
FAA administrator Michael Huerta said: “AIP allows us to invest in the long-term safety and economic vitality of our nation’s airports.”
The airports receiving the discretionary grants include Los Angeles International Airport, Sioux County Regional Airport, Orange County Airport, John Glenn Columbus International Airport and Wilkes-Barre / Scranton International Airport.
