Surveillance and flight tracking solutions specialist Era has commissioned its wide area multilateration (WAM) system for terminal control area (TMA) at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan.
Era has installed the surveillance system as part of a contract it secured from Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB), in cooperation with the Japanese company Toshiba.
JCAB has selected Era’s WAM in a bid to overcome air traffic management challenges in the airport, which is said to be one of two major hubs serving the Tokyo area.
The WAM system provides surveillance for TMA to an extent of 20nm, in addition to working as precision runway monitoring tool for the airport’s parallel runways.
Era has equipped each ground station with a hardware that is designed to operate under difficult outdoor conditions and can withstand temperatures ranging between -40°C and +60°C.
The system will also be able to withstand possible vibrations and movements in the region due to earthquakes.

By GlobalDataLocated 60km east of central Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture, Narita is said to handle close to 50% of the country’s international passenger traffic and 60% of its international air cargo traffic.
As of 2013, Narita was the second-busiest passenger airport in Japan after Haneda, and the tenth busiest air freight hub in the world.
The airport’s 4,000m-long main runway is the longest in Japan.
Prior to this project, ERA and Toshiba have also installed airport surface system in Osaka Itami, the height monitoring system (HMU) in Okayama and the MLAT system at Chubu Centrair Airport in Nagoya.
In October this year, Era secured a contract to supply 125 vehicle-mounted Squid transmitters for surface vehicle tracking in Stavanger Airport Sola in Norway.
The Squid self-contained vehicle tracking unit is said to improve airport safety by continuously broadcasting the exact position of all ground vehicles.
