Boeing Embraer

Boeing and Embraer have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to test environmentally friendly technologies for aviation through the ecoDemonstrator programme.

The deal will expand the existing cooperation between the aircraft manufacturers on various projects, including improving runway safety, and will support Embraer’s KC-390 defence aircraft programme.

Launched in 2011, the ecoDemonstrator programme is designed to evaluate new technologies to reduce carbon emissions and noise, and improve fuel efficiency of aircraft.

The programme has so far tested more than 50 technologies with a next-generation 737-800, a 787 Dreamliner and a 757, including a new winglet and ‘bug-phobic’ wing coatings to improve aerodynamic efficiency, software applications to enhance in-flight efficiency, and sustainable aviation biofuels.

"The ecoDemonstrator programme offers a new and valuable opportunity…to boost environmental development tests."

Embraer president and CEO Frederico Curado said: "The ecoDemonstrator programme offers a new and valuable opportunity for collaboration between our companies to boost environmental development tests, benefiting customers, our industry and the society."

Boeing and Embraer plan to use an Embraer aircraft to conduct ecoDemonstrator tests in 2016.
