The Dubai international airport will soon be cancelling its passport control counters at terminal 3 to ease passenger movement.

As per plans, the passenger information will be passed on in advance to the passport control officers via Emirates Airlines after booking the tickets.

Director general of the general directorate for residency and foreigners affairs in Dubai Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri made the announcement.

If implemented, the step will result in the elimination of long queues at passport control counters.

Despite the removal of the counters, immigration officers will be present at the terminal and would have the authority to stop any passener whose details reveal a criminal case against him or any other reason that bars them from leaving the country.

Marri said that Dubai airport is one of the busiest in the world and it handled close to 71 million passengers in 2014, which is expected to reach 78 million by the end of this year.

"We want our clients to enjoy fast and hassle-free travel and we are honoured with our exceptional immigration customer service as our staff work efficiently to ensure a swift and smooth arrival and departure process for the passengers," said Marri.

Assistant of the director general of the GDRFA-Dubai for Airports’ Affairs Department Talal Al Shanqity said that the airport had installed more passport control desks at Terminal 1 and 3 and more than 100 e-gates have been installed at Terminal 1 and 2.

Smart gates are also available at Terminal 3 at the arrival point which allows registered travellers to clear the immigration process in only 10 to 15 seconds by using either a passport, Emirates ID, Smart Gate card or a QR barcode via the GDRFA DUBAI smartphone app.

Shanqity added that currently, the airport has 28 smart gates at Terminal 3 at the arrival and 100 e-gates at the airports that can be accessed by e-gate card or by Emirates Airline Skywards.
