Frankfurt Airport (FRA) operator Fraport has started work on its new €2.5 to €3bn Terminal 3 that will serve up to 14 million passengers annually.
The move follows the passenger growth forecast results from two independent research institutes that revealed that the passenger traffic at the airport was expected to rise between 68 million and 73 million by 2021.

The first phase of construction under the seven year project will include the main terminal building and two 400m and 600m-long piers called ‘H’ and ‘J’, continuing the nomination of the existing piers at FRA North.
The new terminal with a surface area of nearly 90,000m² will have 20m high terminal hall that will offer space for four check-in areas with a total of 104 counters, 54 baggage drop-off machines.
The hall will also accommodate about 40 ticket counters, which can be increased depending on future requirements.
In addition, the terminal will house 29 security control positions for departing and transfer passengers besides ten baggage claim belts for the passengers arriving at the airport.

By GlobalDataAccording to Fraport, the overall capacity of Terminal 3 can be expanded to some 25 million passengers per year with the addition of two more piers in future.
Terminal 3 piers will provide a total of 24 aircraft docking positions which includes 20 positions designed for wide-body jets such as Airbus A380 superjumbo and the Boeing 747.
The project will see the Terminal 3 linked with the existing terminals at the north side of the airport by installing a new SkyLine people-mover system ensuring optimal intermodal connections for the passengers.
Fraport executive board chairman Dr Stefan Schulte said: "Terminal 3 will meet the highest demands for service and quality. As Germany’s most important airport – particularly for intercontinental flights – Frankfurt will be able to continue offering first-class services and modern infrastructure to our passengers and Germany’s export-driven economy.
"Terminal 3 will also serve as an attractive showcase for the entire Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region. Construction of this outstanding facility will ensure that Frankfurt remains Germany’s Gateway to the World."
With the onset of the new project that is slated to be completed by 2022, the airport is expected to stimulate the economic prosperity in the entire Frankfurt region and beyond.
Currently, the Frankfurt airport is capable of handling 64 million passengers annually.
