Airport operator Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has received environment clearance (EC) from the Indian Government to proceed with the second expansion phase of Kempegowda International Airport.
The expansion plans include the construction of a new terminal, in addition to a second runway, taxiways, aprons, aircraft parking and all aviation facilities and structures.
The expansion is aimed at accommodating future passenger growth, which is expected to reach 55 million by 2030, as well as approximately one million tonnes of cargo.
The project will cater to both aeronautical and non-aeronautical infrastructure facilities.
BIAL managing director G V Sanjay Reddy said: "The second stage of the EC for our airport now paves the way for us to secure the final approvals for the project. This expansion is the key to achieving our overall vision of making Bangalore the gateway to south India."
"As a responsible corporate, BIAL accords high priority to protect the environment and conservation of natural resources," added Reddy.
