Dubai-based Arabtec Construction and its joint venture (JV) partner TAV Construction of Turkey have won a $1.1bn contract to construct a new terminal at Bahrain International Airport.
Funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, the project has been awarded by the Bahrain Airports Company (BAC).
It is one among the several awards that were announced by the company along with Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) during Bahrain International Air Show (BIAS) 2016.
The company had received a letter of intent from Bahrain Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications to award the deal to Arabtec and its JV partner, reported The National.
The scope of the project includes construction of a new passenger terminal, an aircraft bay and the main services building. This terminal is expected to boost the airport’s capacity to 14 million passengers annually.
BAC CEO Mohammed Albinfalah was quoted by Meconstructionnews.com as saying: "In order to keep up with the rapid pace of progress in the aviation industry, MTT in cooperation with BAC has put in place this ambitious programme which will be implemented in phases.

The first bid on the project from contractors was invited in August 2014.
Arabtec acting chief executive Saeed Mohamed Al Mehairbi was quoted by The National as saying: "Arabtec has extensive experience in airport projects, currently performing the construction of Abu Dhabi’s Midfield Terminal.
"Such major projects have a strategic importance for the development of the region’s capabilities and the continuing growth of the GCC."
Other awards announced at BIAS included a $11.7m contract with China-based CIMC for passenger air bridges, a $29.7m contract with L3 Communications from the US for security screening equipment, a $12.5m deal with Finland-based Kone for the horizontal and vertical transfer systems, and a $31m contract with the Netherlands’ Vanderlande for baggage handling system.
