Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) is set to carry out a series of major improvements of existing airport facilities at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), which will involve an investment of about HKD7bn ($897m).

Upgrades will be made at Terminal 1 of the airport to enhance airport handling capacity, in addition to offering a wide range of new experiences for the passengers.

AA CEO Fred Lam said: “The enhancement projects for Terminal 1, together with the three-runway system in 2024, will increase the airport’s handling capacity, as well as bring a fresh look and feel.

“Passengers from around the world will enjoy an experience tantamount to travelling through a new airport.”

The scope of the project will include the installation of more than 40 new check-in counters with self-bag drop facilities and two new additional baggage reclaim carousels at HKIA.

More seats, shops and catering outlets will be made available for the travellers in the expanded arrivals hall on the landside.

The airport improvements will also see the development of an extension building adjacent to the existing Car Park 4 that would offer nearly 1,400 additional parking spaces, in addition to providing premises for the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy and HKIA Preschool developments and other staff-related facilities.

AA will construct a weather-proof footbridge that will connect Terminal 1 with the North Satellite Concourse at the airport.

Known as Sky Bridge, the new 28m-high and 200m-long footbridge will help reduce travelling time for the passengers and the need for using shuttle buses, while providing space for the accommodation of the largest A380 flights.

In addition, the expanded East Hall of Terminal 1 will feature a new roof garden, a children's play area, and a recreational zone providing new technologies for travellers.

The final completion of the multi-phase enhancement project is slated for 2020.
