Scottish regional airline Loganair has formed a partnership with aircraft manufacturer Heart Aerospace to establish use cases for its hybrid electric aircraft within the airline’s network.

The exclusive agreement will support Loganair’s ambitions to reach net zero emissions by 2040 and Heart’s development of its 30-passenger hybrid-electric ES-30 aircraft.

Loganair CEO Luke Farajallah said: “This exclusive collaboration with Heart Aerospace brings together two organisations who share a passion to see aviation emissions reduce in a realistic and meaningful way, and we definitely see the ES-30 as being a strong contender to emerge as one of the leaders in this space.”

The ES-30 is being designed for regional aviation operations and is expected to have a range of 200km for all-electric flight, pushing to 400km for hybrid operations and 800km for a flight with only 25 passengers onboard.

Loganair will support the aircraft’s development by both establishing use cases and engaging with Scottish and UK governments, along with airports, to promote the technology, which will involve a battery-electric propulsion system used in combination with a generator running on biofuel.

Based in Sweden, Heart has been developing its technology since 2018 and began focussing on the ES-30 in 2022, with plans to achieve type certification for the vehicle in 2028.
