İGA Havalimanı İşletmesi (IGA) has announced that the installation of new baggage handling system (BHS) has been completed at Istanbul New Airport.
İGA is the company responsible for operating Istanbul New Airport in Turkey.
The new 42km baggage handling system is capable of processing up to 28,880 bags per hour. Once operational, the new BHS will also decrease passengers’ waiting time for their luggage.
Design, production, delivery and assembly of the system was completed in two years.
İGA airport construction CEO Yusuf Akçayoğlu said: “Baggage system is critical for Istanbul New Airport, which will be serving 200 million passengers a year along with flight services to more than 350 destinations when all phases are complete.
“Baggage sorting and stocking will be made by smart devices operating with 170 special microprocessors. We will be able to handle 28,800 baggage per hour.”

By GlobalDataThe terminal building is also equipped with 13 check-in islands and 468 desks where passengers can check-in their luggage.
Thanks to the 10,800 baggage storing capacity of the new system, passengers arriving early to the airport can check-in luggage as soon as they arrive.
The system includes 28 incoming passenger baggage receiver carousels. This includes ten domestic and 18 international carousels, and eight of these can sort out F and E series wide-body aircraft.
A total of 48 baggage carousels will help to sort out outgoing baggage based on flights, Akçayoğlu added.
