Tech firm ICM Airport Technics has installed more than 100 Series 1 Type 2 self-service bag-drop (SSBD) units in Terminals 2, 3 and 5 at Heathrow Airport.
The SSBD units, which have been designed and deployed by ICM Airport Technics, decrease travellers’ check-in times and are currently being used by several airlines, including British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, and Virgin Atlantic.
The milestone of over 100 installations was achieved after a framework agreement was signed between ICM and Heathrow in early 2018. The partners agreed to collaborate on an integrated SSBD product for use in all Heathrow terminals.
As part of the agreement, ICM provided the units, equipped with CUSS platform and White Label application and also offered managed support services.
The installation of SSBD units forms part of Heathrow’s larger automation programme to provide self-service options to passengers.
The automation programme comprises a biometrics project, under which biometrics will be used across the passenger journey, including bag-drop.
