GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) has concluded the first phase of pavement preservation of main runway at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad, India.

GHIAL operates RGIA and used Airport Grade Steel Guard (AGSG) technology to increase the runway’s lifespan for several more years.

AGSG features a quick-setting, which enables the runway to sustain the normal air traffic level after two hours of use during day-time, and 45 minutes in between the layers’ application.

The asphalt protective coat application has been designed to preserve and extend the life of existing asphalt pavement surfaces.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport CEO SGK Kishore said: “Keeping an eye on advancements in airport technologies globally, we have been adopting new and proven practices to continuously enhance our operational excellence.

“We have used Airport Grade Steel Guard technology for preserving our decade-long main runway.”

The Hyderabad airport has taken care of around one-third of the runway during the first phase of work.

During repair works, air traffic movement was transferred to the secondary runway without disturbing airport operations.

The AGSG technology does not require the pavement to be dug out, the main runway was fully operational every day before and after maintenance works until the project was completed.

GHIAL hired Mumbai-based companies to carry out the works, while the technology was provided by a US-based firm.

As a result, GHIAL was able to complete the project in less than 15 days, compared with the conventional mode of runway preservation that can take more than three months.
