London’s Gatwick Airport has introduced a new information portal designed to offer personalised information on aircraft noise to residents.
Information available in Gatwick’s Noise and Track keeping system is made accessible through the new portal.
Claimed to be the first such tool in Europe, the new portal uses an interactive approach to allow residents to find noise information based on their location. It will display videos to explain to users how the airport operates.
With the portal’s help, residents can find details such as the number of aircraft flying near their location and at what height. It will provide data on flights from Gatwick, as well as other nearby airports.
Gatwick’s Noise and Track system was procured in April as part of a £1m investment to improve aircraft noise monitoring and reporting.
The investment also covered the development of a new noise website and the installation of 23 noise monitors, as well as an app and phone line.

By GlobalDataGatwick Airport airspace head Andy Sinclair said: “While many people benefit from having Gatwick on their doorstep, a number are impacted by aircraft noise and we want to make sure we are as open and transparent as possible about the issue.
“This new portal can be accessed through the noise pages of our website. It gives local residents a wealth of easy-to-use information at their fingertips and we hope that the new portal, together with our wider noise management programme, help to improve public confidence and trust.
“Over time, aircraft noise has reduced and in the next few years I expect further reductions as new aircraft that are up to 50% quieter replace older versions. We recognise however that more must be done and we look forward to developing a range of new initiatives, many through our Noise Management Board, to reduce noise further still.”
Last month, Gatwick’s chatbot, known as Gail, was launched on Facebook Messenger. It allows passengers to receive flight-specific notifications and access information relating to their flight or facilities available at the airport.
