The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Dominion Energy Virginia have agreed to jointly study the development of a 100MW solar energy project at Washington Dulles International Airport.
Dominion Energy recently signed a sublease with the Airports Authority for the feasibility studies, which will move the project forward.
To be spread over 1,200 acres, the solar farm could power up to 25,000 homes at peak output.
It will become the biggest solar facility in the northern region of Virginia when operational in 2023.
The generated electricity will be delivered to commercial customers via Dominion Energy’s existing transmission line on the airport property.
Dulles International Airport manager Mike Stewart said: “Partnering with Dominion Energy on this important project will give us the data and tools we need to determine the role that solar energy can play at a major international airport now and in the future.
