Construction work has commenced on a $230m refurbishment project for the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Terminal 6 in the US.
As part of the project, the gate areas and the lounges will undergo a complete revamp.

The scope of work will also include the replacement of passenger boarding bridges.
Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners president Sean Burton said: “LAX is bringing to life our vision for a reimagined airport from top to bottom, providing the very best terminals, transportation and services to our guests.
“Terminal 6 represents another opportunity to put our best foot forward to the world as we deliver on our infrastructure promises.”
Besides, the project includes improvements to how guests access US Customs and Border Protection’s Federal Inspection Station (FIS).

By GlobalDataAs part of the upgrades, Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) security screening checkpoint will be modernised to incorporate five automated screening lanes and three standard lanes.
Additionally, a drive-through bus gate is part of the project, which will offer better access for guests transferring to or from other terminals.
Airside improvements will include new apron paving, fuel lines and other airfield infrastructure.
The airside improvement is in addition to the concurrent construction of a Terminal Vertical Core, which will link Terminals 5 and 6 to the future automated people mover train system.
Three gates on the Terminal 6 satellite’s southeast end have been closed to enable work in that area. These works will be carried out in a phased manner until 2023.
The Terminal 6 satellite was originally built in 1961.
Furthermore, the four gate area hold rooms capacity will be increased. Upgrades are being carried out at 11 other gate areas to create a consistent look throughout the space.
The project is being administered by Alaska Airlines, the leaseholder in Terminal 6.
Air Canada leases two gates and shares a common-use gate in Terminal 6. Currently, the terminal is also used by Boutique Air and Southern Airways.
Earlier this month, the construction of LAX’s $2bn Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility achieved a milestone after the structure was topped off by pouring concrete on its last 233,000 cubic yards.
