Cairns Airport in Australia has announced the completion of the T2 Domestic Terminal upgrade project following a construction period of 18 months.
In July 2018, Cairns Airport revealed plans to upgrade its domestic terminal to accommodate more passengers while offering an improved travel experience.
The A$55m ($39.26m) terminal upgrade included extensive planning that spanned many stages such as understanding the passenger needs and engaging with local suppliers.
The project also provides different improvements for the passenger experience.
The renovated terminal is spread over 10,000m² and features an upgraded layout, along with improved screening flow and decreased congestion.
Passengers can also enjoy a wide selection of local food, beverage, and retail.

By GlobalDataThe T2 Domestic upgrade includes various environmentally friendly features such as carpet made from recycled fishing nets, along with natural and LED lighting.
In addition, the upgraded waste management strategy of the terminal uses three-stream waste bins and a macerator.
This reduces organic food waste for composting, which is said to be the third of its kind in the country.
The other features of the terminal include expanded seating areas, an interactive play screen for children, an upgraded parenting room and quiet room for passengers with hidden disabilities.
Cairns Airport CEO Norris Carter said: “Our domestic terminal is a key piece of infrastructure for both our airport and our community and despite the challenges of recent months, it’s great to reflect on what we’ve achieved.
“When we commenced this project, we set ambitious targets to leave a positive and lasting legacy for Far North Queensland and to provide a first-class airport experience.
“The T2 Domestic Terminal upgrade recognises our underlying optimism in the future of this region, and Cairns Airport’s commitment to continue to drive connectivity to the Far North.”
