Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors and perception software provider Blickfeld has started phase one of a passenger flow detection application at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in Germany.
Blickfeld has teamed up with the evaluation expert Sensalytics for the installation of Blickfeld LiDAR sensors ‘Cube one’ in the check-in hall A of Terminal one for airport’s operator Fraport.
The technology is claimed to improve passenger traffic prediction at security checkpoints.
Blickfeld said the additional data recorded in the check-in hall will enable staffing the lanes staff and the evasion of long waiting hours.
In combination with the counting and tracking software, these sensors have the ability to anonymously record the flow of the passengers over a large area.
Blickfeld stated that the application will provide a short-term prediction of passenger volumes and optimise passenger logistics in the future.

By GlobalDataBy generating point Cloud data, the sensors create an accurate 3D image of the hall.
Furthermore, the sensors meet all data protection conditions as they record passengers and their movements without revealing their identities.
Fraport strategy and digitalisation department project manager Jennifer Berz said: “We put the sensors and the Blickfeld algorithm through their paces in an initial project phase and are very satisfied with the results. The technology has the potential to further optimise service for our customers.”
Blickfeld founder Florian Petit said: “Beyond its prominent role in the automotive industry, LiDAR is a versatile technology that enables the highest level of reliability in numerous other applications.
“LiDAR data offers a new dimension of precision and privacy as the 3D distance data enables not only the highest accuracy but also absolute anonymity. This is a clear advantage over other sensor technologies such as cameras.”
