Delhi International Airport (DIAL) has announced it will ban single-use plastic products at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), aiming to make it plastic-free by the end of next year.

To eliminate single-use plastics, also known as disposable plastics, the airport has launched a number of initiatives, including creating awareness, improving waste management systems and promoting the use of eco-friendly sustainable alternatives.

DIAL said that the initiative aligns with India’s pledge to abolish all single-use plastic in the country by 2022.

DIAL will ensure that all the food and beverage items sold at the airport will be packed in bio-friendly packaging. The airport operator will also mandate eco-friendly bags for retail shopping.

“DIAL aims to minimise waste by recycling single-use plastic items, as well as improving segregation and collection of waste throughout the airport.”

Delhi International Airport CEO Videh Jaipuriar was quoted by hindustantimes.com as saying: “DIAL is an environmentally responsible organisation. Over the years, it has taken many initiatives towards environment protection and sustainable development.

“Our objective is to make the Delhi airport free of single-use plastic, in line with the PM’s vision. This would be another significant step towards achieving environmental sustainability at IGIA.”

DIAL aims to minimise waste by recycling single-use plastic items, as well as improving segregation and collection of waste throughout the airport.

Currently, waste generated at the airport is separated into biodegradable and recyclable categories.

IGIA handled more than 63.5 million passengers during 2017-18.

Similarly to IGIA, Bengaluru International Airport has also been moving to ban single-use plastic packaging and items.
