Norwegian airport operator Avinor has allocated a total of NOK3.3bn ($403.8m) to upgrade the airside part of the terminal at Oslo Airport in the country.
The company believe that the proposed improvement will provide a significantly better service to passengers travelling to and from countries outside the Schengen area.
Construction works are scheduled to commence in October this year while the expansion is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2022.
Avinor CEO Dag Falk-Petersen said: “This expansion is important for developing Oslo Airport as an international hub.
“It will provide increased capacity and improve conditions for our passengers and airlines, as well as improve the framework conditions for Norwegian travel, tourism and business – which is an important part of Avinor’s strategy.”
The existing capacity of the area for traffic outside of the Schengen Area is 5.5 million travellers per annum. Upon the completion of the expansion, it will be able to manage approximately 8 million passengers.

By GlobalDataFalk-Peterson further stated that traffic to and from countries outside of the Schengen Area has increased in recent years. He also identified sustainable infrastructure as an essential way to support the growing traffic.
Under the expansion plan, a total of 14 aircraft parking spaces will be developed, four of which will be flexible gates that can manage traffic from areas both inside and outside the Schengen Area.
The extension will provide a total area of 39,700m² for travellers to countries beyond the Schengen Area.
Additionally, the expansion also involves adaptations for US Preclearance. However, binding participation from concerned airlines and a bilateral agreement between the US and Norway is a precondition for executing such a solution.
