Archer Aviation, a US-based developer and manufacturer of eVTOL aircraft, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines with the aim of developing air taxi networks across California.
The deal is not the first tie-up between an eVTOL developer and a major airline, but it marked a new step towards an air taxi service with a broad client base.
The MoU will lead to the development of an air taxi network based at California airports where Southwest currently operates. The major domestic US airline operates at 14 sites across the state and said it hoped an air taxi network would replace one-hour to 90-minute car journeys.
In June the eVTOL company signed another MoU with Signature Aviation to develop bases for its future service at smaller regional airports and private terminals at some of the most popular destinations across the US, including Chicago and San Francisco.
“Southwest is eager to explore the convenience Archer’s air taxis could provide Customers flying Southwest at airports in busy urban areas,” said Paul Cullen, vice president for real Estate at Southwest Airlines.
“We’ve proudly served as California’s largest carrier for nearly 25 years, and integrating Archer’s electric aircraft into the travel journey potentially gives us an innovative opportunity to enhance the experience of flying Southwest. We look forward to collaborating with Archer as we assess future commercial activities in California and other Southwest locations.”

By GlobalDataArcher’s chief commercial officer Nikhil Goel said the urban air mobility firm needed to partner with existing airlines with existing infrastructure.
“By putting together Southwest’s impressive network of airports in California and their frequent intrastate flights with our planned network, Southwest customers could someday complete door-to-door trips like Santa Monica to Napa in less than three hours,” Goel said.
And the State of California has added its weight to the project, with a senior advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom recently supporting the ambition.
“This initiative is designed to help revolutionize clean transportation with zero-direct emission and affordable options, enhancing the passenger experience, and supporting California’s climate action goals,” Dee Dee Myers said.
“Archer’s collaboration with Southwest to introduce air taxis in California showcases our state’s dedication to climate innovation and advanced technology,” the Clinton-era White House Press Secretary added.
