The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have reached an agreement with Fredericton International Airport Authority (FIAA) to finance the planned expansion of the terminal building at Fredericton International Airport (YFC).

Through the New Building Canada Fund, Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects (PTIC-NRP), the governments are each contributing C$9m ($7.03m) for the modernisation project.

Fredericton parliament member Matt DeCourcey said: “The Fredericton International Airport brings hundreds of thousands of people to New Brunswick annually.

“This project is critical, and we are grateful that all levels of government recognise the importance of the airport to our region’s economy.”

“Modern and efficient transportation infrastructure provides greater economic opportunities for Canadian businesses, connecting them to regional and international markets, and provides good jobs for the middle-class and those working hard to join it.”

Under the project, additional ticket counters will be installed and a security screening area will be modernised. The project also includes the provision of larger arrival and waiting areas, as well as updated heating and cooling systems.

The terminal expansion and modernisation will enable YFC to continue to support the increased traffic and economic impact while creating an additional 572 full-time jobs during the construction phase.

FIAA president and CEO Johanne Gallant said: “This project is critical, and we are grateful that all levels of government recognise the importance of the airport to our region’s economy.”

The expansion of airport will boost the size of the terminal by 50%. Upon completion, the airport will provide efficient traffic flow for passengers checking in for flights and extra space to accommodate more travellers.

It will also offer increased energy-efficiency, covered walkways for aircraft boarding, and improved comfort at the airport.

Design work has been completed and the project is tender-ready. Construction is scheduled to commence this year.
