Abu Dhabi Airports has awarded a contract to the joint venture (JV) of Orascom Construction and Al Sahraa General Transport & Clearance Abu Dhabi for the expansion of Fujairah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The contract is based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Abu Dhabi Airports and the Department of Civil Aviation of the Emirate of Fujairah, UAE, in 2014.
Under the MoU, Abu Dhabi Airports will lead the expansion programme and provide its resources in the planning stage of the programme.
Abu Dhabi Airports will also provide administrative assistance to manage the construction by engaging third-party construction managers, design consultants, construction contractors and other essential entities of the programme.
As part of the new contract, the JV will design and build a new parallel taxiway and emergency runway with airfield lighting system.
It will also renovate and extend the existing runway and connecting taxiways by replacing the present airfield ground and approach lighting systems, adding a new air traffic control tower and air traffic management systems, as well as an aircraft rescue and firefighting substation.
